Eighteen points. The next to last game of the regular Luther Varsity Basketball season was in Meeker on Friday night. While the wins for both the girls and boys teams were likely, there was excitement about those 18 points that Senior Syrus Grisby would need to pass the elusive 1500 point marker for a high school ball player. Would he achieve the goal during this game, or the last game on Monday night?

Plenty of Lions earned “assist” points throughout the game as they got the ball to number 15. When Grisby had racked up 16 points, within the goal, he landed a jaw-dropping three-pointer to surpass the goal.

The show of sportsmanship wasn’t over though. When Meeker senior Isaac Watham shot and made his first three-pointer in the last few seconds of the game, the whole building erupted in applause. Luther cheerleaders joined Meeker’s squad in the “three-point cheer,” and the Lions joined the Bulldogs on the court to surround Watham and congratulate him.

For his own accomplishment, Grisby championed his teammates. “I’m glad my teammates pushed me that far. It couldn’t have happened without them,” he said. In fact, 15 of Grisby’s 19 points came from assists. “I’m blessed to be able to play with a group of guys like them,” He said. “Not only are they teammates but brothers.”
