The Luther Lions football team is going to the State Championship after all. Word came in Thursday that the LIONS has the best academic record of all 2A schools in the state.
That’s makes them Academic Champions. The team will receive the award at the 2A championship game in Owasso on December 7.

The Lions football season was made up of highs and lows marked with courage, learning and fight. It all was well-chronicled by The Lion Reporter and on the Mitchell Talks weekly podcast.
High School Principal Shawn Meek said the team is made up of a great group of kids, and in his ten years in Luther, the football team has not achieved this worthwhile honor.
“It’s definitely a collective effort of parents, teachers and kids who made it possible,” said Meek who is the former Lions Head Football Coach and is in his first year as high school Principal and Athletic Director. “The coaches did a great job of reinforcing academics, checking on their schoolwork weekly. I can’t brag enough on the team. We are very proud of them.”

Head Football Coach Zack Smith said the team will travel to the championship to receive the honor.
“It is an award for the highest combined gpa for a football team in each class. We had the highest combined GPA of all letterman for 2A. Teams pull the GPA from every player on their roster and send the form to OSSAA,” said Coach Smith.
There are 64 2A teams in the state, according to OSSAA. The Luther Football team collectively earned a higher GPA than all of the other teams.

The Lady Lions basketball team also has earned academic All-State honors last year and in years previously. Incidentally, the first home game for the basketball teams is December 4.
So proud of the Luther Lions!❤️
