The Luther Lions played the Northeast Academy Vikings on Thursday night for the last regular season game for 2017. It was the first November football game, and boy was it cold. The wind had shifted from the north, and as it snuck, I mean roared, through the north end zone, noses turned red, eyes watered, and the blankets on spectators were wrapped as tight as possible. For the Meeker game last week, everyone was prepared for the coldest weather with coats upon coats to keep warm. But this week, it seemed as though everyone forgot what a forty degree north wind felt like. It didn’t take long for it to jog our memories, and there were four quarters of football to go before game-week 10 closed!
The Lions brought home the win for a nine win and one game loss on the 2017 season. Luther beat Northeast 34-6.
Luther found the end zone early in the first quarter, which set the tone for the game. In fact, there were only about 45 seconds off the clock when Luther scored for the first tiem! The first scoring drive by 1 Coleman Stastny was followed by a completed 2-point conversion by 24 Dakota Pridemore, a touchdown by 22 Jesse Cole, and a touchdown by 4 Tyler Becker. Lions held a 20-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
In the second quarter, Northeast scored to make it 20-6, but then Luther recoiled and scored 6 more from 10 Peyton Wilson to 24 Dakota Pridemore. ’Twas 26-6 at the half.
Mid-third quarter, Luther scored a touchdown and adds 6 more to the scoreboard. Luther also tackled a Northeast Viking in Lion end zone territory, resulting in a safety for 2 points. End of the third quarter, Lions up 34-6.
The fourth quarter was stagnant on the scoreboard. Nobody scored. Luther won it 34-6 for week 10 to conclude regular season.
Lion defense is fun to watch! Many quarterback sacs or tackles in the backfield for loss of yards helped the Lion offense to more of our worthy scoring drives. Two major ones that stood out were 22 Jesse Cole and 8 Devin Bean. Great game, Luther!
Week One of 2017 playoffs start this Friday, November 10th. Luther’s record for the year allowed for a home opener for 2017 playoffs on Luther’s own Wilson Field. Luther draws Hennessy for Round One. All playoff games will begin at 7:30pm, rather than the 7:00pm games for season play. Gate admission is a standard for playoffs, and you might expect an increase. Please join us in the bleachers on Friday night, November 10th for some Lion Ball and to cheer Luther to week 2 of 2017 State Playoffs.
