Football fans are going to love this. Actually anyone is going to love this.
There’s a new podcast in town. It’s about Luther Lion football and features head coach Zack Smith with Scott Mitchell of Mitchell Talks. Aside from the fact it might be our ONLY Luther-centric podcast, it might be a sign of things to come. What a better topic to start on than Friday Night Lights and the Luther Lions.
The first thing you’ll love about the podcast is hearing the band play the Luther fight song. Then Mitchell, veteran broadcaster, jumps right in with Coach Smith. The first episode not only dissects last week’s trouncing of the Wellston Tigers, but there’s a good amount of discussion about this week’s game, a tough battle against Prague which is Friday night. Note, we’ll likely be able to get this podcast available to you earlier in the week – but with a holiday week plus getting the tech side together, aren’t we all glad we can hear it now? Thank you MItchell Talks; this is pretty great.
Mitchell asked about the 2017 Lions after the departure of key seniors last year including Chad Pridemore.
“Chad was one of the winningest quarterbacks in school history. He was the top passer in school history. He was a good leader for us last year and got us through a couple of really tough playoff games. He’s impossible to replace, but (sophomore quarterback) Peyton (Wilson) works really hard and spends more hours than anyone else on the team looking at film. I’m looking forward to seeing what Peyton does the rest of the year and what he can do,” Coach Smith told Mitchell.
Smith is in his second year as head coach of the Lions. And the support of the community still impresses him.
“The fanbase in Luther is excellent. We should all be proud to be from Luther. We have a great school and great programs. It’s just a great community and you can feel the electricity in the air when the stands are packed.”
He thanked the fans and parents for their support, feeding the team every week, fund-raising and selling t-shirts. “The kids really notice and appreciate it and so do the coaches.”
Looking ahead.
“We got a test this week coming up. Prague is a pretty good football team,” said Coach Smith. “It’s gonna be a good game.” He recalled last years Prague game, it was Luther’s homecoming, and the Lions lost a stunner. The challenge will be just as hard this year as Prague’s offense and defense are some of the best he’s seen. The thing to watch Friday night will be turnovers, he said.
“Prague is really talented. We are really talented. It’s going to be a battle,” said Smith.
And so he needs the fans there in full force and reminds Lion Nation it’s only a 40 minute drive to Red Devil country. The game starts at 7:30 pm (not 7pm as on the schedule).
