A week for Town & School Board Meetings

Bison Blinds

Those who govern our Town and Luther Public Schools will meet this week for monthly meetings.

MONDAY NIGHT: School Board
Read the agenda here. Of note is the hiring of a new middle school principal. One name is on the list, and it’s a familiar one, Mr. Shawn Meek, previously known mostly as Coach Meek. He was the high school football coach who took the Lions deep into the play-offs in the 2015 season, and served as interim high school principal in the spring semester (a year ago at this time) until Mr. Jerry Martin was hired. Meek left LPS last year for a coaching and teaching gig in Kingfisher. His name is on the agenda tonight to be considered at Luther’s new middle school principal, succeeding long-time middle school principal Barry Gunn who was named Luther Superintendent March 9.

The four-member school board will go behind closed doors in executive session to consider Mr. Gunn’s contract and salary. They will also “discuss the appointment of an individual and/or interview candidates for the vacant school seat #3.” That seat was held by Charles DeFuria who resigned at the regular March meeting. According to School Board President Steve Broudy, there are two candidates asked to be appointed by the board to fulfill DeFuria’s term. They are Matt Mohr and Doug Wilson. Broudy indicated a decision will not happen tonight, and applications continue to be accepted.

The appointed school board member will serve until next February, less than one year, to the next election. If the four-member board cannot agree on an appointee, they must schedule a special election. They have 60 days to accomplish this starting from March 9 when DeFuria’s resignation was accepted during a Special Meeting.

The Luther Register will broadcast the meeting on Facebook Live.

MONDAY NIGHT: New Town Board non-official public meeting
Less than a week after their election, and also a week before they are sworn in, the new Luther Town Trustees will meet in a public session Monday night at the Community Center to discuss their goals.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Luther Town Board of Trustees Meeting
The final regular meeting of the current Board will be held Tuesday night at the Community Center. The agenda was published for that meeting on Monday afternoon.  The LPWA agenda was also published.

THURSDAY NIGHT: Luther Planing Commission. That agenda will be posted later.
