Word is some Luther dads, teachers and friends have been hard at work on the hardwoods, prepping for the big game this Saturday night. They’re taking on ABI (Amputees Basketball Invigorated) for a benefit basketball game for one of Iz’s friends.
Just a year ago, the Luther team met ABI on the court to “Help Iz Run.” It was a great night of fun and good cheer for a good cause to help Iz Lawson, Luther’s nine-year-old “cancer warrior priness!
This time the effort is to help Iz’s friend Ajay. This 15-year-old has the same cancer that Iz beat. Here’s what the event page says about it.
ABI will be playing for a special young man named Ajay King who loves basketball and who is currently battling Osteosarcoma. Ajay was diagnosed in October after originally seeing the doctor for a jammed pinky. The doctor noticed Ajay’s limp and ordered an MRI that showed Osteosarcoma in the 15-year-olds leg and hip. After 10 weeks of chemotherapy, Ajay had surgery in January resulting in the amputation of all his pelvic and hip bones on the left side. ABI has jumped for the opportunity to help Ajay and his family. All the money raised at this game will go directly to Ajay and his family to help with their medical expenses, as well as give Ajay some hope during his fight with cancer.
Iz’s mom Desiree Lawson says her daughter has a special friendship with Ajay.
“The reason why we chose to do this is Iz feels responsible for the kids that still have to endure treatment. This is our way of paying it forward for all the love and support she received,” said Mrs. Lawson.
This game is the best ticket in town this Saturday night. Tickets are $10 at the door. Check out the Facebook event here.
DJ Shorty B will be there to bring the party, and there will be lots of other surprises making it a fun night.
