In overtime, the Lady Lions took care of the Wellston Tigers on the hardwoods Friday night.
Free throws sealed the deal; plus the hard work of Sophomore Caitlin Bailey who scored 20 points against the Route 66 rivals on the Lions’ home court.
The game was nip and tuck all four quarters, with Luther edging Wellston most of the time, until a fourth quarter dramatic buzzer beater by Wellston tied the game at 37 points at the end of regulation.
With four more minutes on the OT clock, the Lions were sent to the free throw line numerous times, and made ten of them – showing a hint of the teams’ discipline and skill at fundamentals. The frees plus a bucket secured the win with a final 49 – 41 score.
In addition to leading scorer Bailey (#25), juniors Maia Wright (# 32) and Lexi Allen (#4) put numbers on the board. Other scorers were freshman Raychel Stanfield (#24), junior Johnna Stottleyire (#21) and senior Apryl Campos (#20). Wright scored just seven, but considering she’s in most of the pictures accompanying this article, her contributions with defense and ball-handling show her value on the team. Stottlemyre pitched in some fearless defensive work on post.
A win is a win. Coach Johnny Vick said he is proud of his team who played hard in front of a passionate crowd.
“I am pleased with where we are. We are playing better and this is a learning process for our young team,” said Coach Vick.
No games over the break, but there will be practice to get ready for tougher competition ahead.
It was a win sweep for the Luther Lions in the gym Friday night with a “W” for all in the Lady and Boys JV teams and the Varsity Boys.
