A week after a 40 acre grass fire threatened a homeschool co-op building and home in Luther, a Luther family is holding a fund-raiser in the Paseo District of Oklahoma City to raise money for the Luther (volunteer) Fire Department.
It was last Friday, October 28, right after lunch time when the call came in of a quick moving grassfire along Coffee Creek Road between Henney and Indian Meridian, just west of the “LAB” (Luther Academic Barn). Large billows of smoke could be seen from town – and Luther Fire was quick to the scene. Students were gone from the LAB after a morning anatomy class, and the Olsen family who lives there was returning home from lunch in Luther.

Mutual aid was provided by Hickory Hills, Jones, Edmond and Oklahoma City and the firefighters fought the flames and the wind getting it on control. They monitored subsequent hot spots on through the evening saving all buildings, animals, the LAB and the family’s home. But the fire that started on an adjacent property close to the road came very close to causing more destruction. The cause remains under investigation.
The Olsens and friends sponsor monthly fundraisers at Paseo’s First Friday Art Walk to raise funds for organizations like Anna’s House Foundation, and other worthy causes.
To Cassandra Olsen, it was obvious that this month, they would raise money for Luther’s Fire Department.

“Bring a lawn chair and come help support our local fire deptment. All proceeds will go directly to the fire department as a thank you for saving the LAB!” she said.
