It was a PINK OUT night in Luther. Fans and players alike showed their pops of pink to highlight breast cancer awareness. Thursday night was also Little League appreciation night, as the youth of Luther football was introduced at halftime.
At Wilson Field, the smell of a smoker with tons of meat was welcome. A heart-felt “thank you” to Wyatt Stastny for supplying the smoked meat to feed a village – specifically three briskets, 17 slabs of ribs and 3 rolls of bologna. It was a delicious post-game dinner with sides and desserts provided by The Touchdown Club and others.
The game on the field came down to who was the last one to score before the time ran out. Unfortunately, Luther lost the battle to the Christian Heritage Academy Crusaders, in a loss 21-14.
Luther ran a fast, high-tempo offense. The Lions ran the field; first, second, third and then fourth-downs, only to gain yet another first down, and then SCORE. Luther showed energy and drive. Turn overs were hard to recover from after coming up short in the fourth quarter.
Fumbles recovered and tackles made for loss of yardage brought even more energy on defense. Hard, slobber slinging hits and tackles were easy to spot on the sideline. Blocked passes on defense held the Crusaders to just 21 points. However, CHA’s safety and field goals allowed them to come out on top, 7 points ahead of Luther. Thursday night’s loss gives Luther a loss in district play. Luther is 5-2 on the season, and 2-1 in district play.
A role model was in the crowd on Thursday night. Former Coach Shawn Meek and his family drove over from Kingfisher to watch the Lions. With hugs all around, and smiles galore – the visit was a highlights for the team and fellow teachers in the stands who shared hugs and stories with the Meek family.
The Little League Teams were announced at half-time and a nice crowd of Lions came early to enjoy games and fun as part of radio station 101.9 The Twister’s tail-gate party.
