It is GAMEDAY to kick-off for the 2016 Luther Lion football season. The Luther Lions will host Bethel High School for the first home game of the season. As we countdown the hours, minutes, and seconds until kickoff, like we do, let us introduce to you the coaching staff for the 2016-2017 season.

As Head Coach of the new 2016 football team, we have Coach Zack Smith, of Arlington, Texas, and Boyd High School. Coach Smith graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where he held the position as a Defensive Lineman for all four years. Coach met his wife, Katie, in college and they have been married since 2003. The Smiths have two children, Brock, 10, and Brooklyn, 8. Coach Smith and his family live in our town, and he says he feels great honor to represent our home, especially in the biggest sport in Oklahoma–FOOTBALL.
Since college, Smith has had the opportunity to coach and teach at both small and large schools. In the classroom, Smith has the knowledge to teach health and biology at the high school level. On the field, Smith says his expertise is in the position of the offensive and defensive line. Furthermore, Smith has experience in coaching all positions, including coordinating offense and defense. This year, we will see Coach Smith’s skills as defensive coordinator and in his favorite realm– with our lineman.

When asked upon the meaning of the new #MyTown hashtag on the football gear this year, Smith responded with a Mike Gundy quote, “This is my Notre Dame.” Coach Smith also said that he can already see that he will enjoy the coworkers, students, and players in Luther Public Schools. Coach says he has “dreamed of working for a small school with hardworking parents and players, supporting the positive influences of the football program.” With this, #MyTown arose out of the framework to express how Coach Smith feels in Luther. This new slogan for the football program emphasizes pride, will make opponents feel the threat when it’s “Luther week.” What better way to show your PRIDE than to wear it on your back?
