Calling all actors! The Luther Christian Church has found a niche to provide a bit of a community theatre for those with a talent for acting, costuming and set design; and for those of us who enjoy sitting in the audience.

Although we are full into the Christmas season, Pastor Johnny Melton is putting out a call for actors for a play to be presented around Easter time.

“The originLCC2angelsal name of the play was ‘A Christmas to Remember,’ but I have renamed it ‘Rainbows in the Mud’ and tweaked the story line to accommodate the change of season,” said Melton who serves part-time for the Luther congregation.

He said the play’s main character is a young woman with special needs.

“She is very sweet natured, but does have her moments. I wanted to bring attention to families that have these kinds of challenges. It is very difficult for the caregivers. They are usually the parents of the challenged child, and this play captures some of those challenges. I want to bring awareness to people,” said Melton and adds there are plenty of laugh lines to go with the heartfelt message.

He said any actors over the age of 13 are welcome to audition and no experience is necessary, but members of the cast should commit to rehearse a couple of times per week.

“We welcome all who want to try out. This is not a play that is comprised of only members of our church. We consider this to be a community ministry, therefore all are welcome,” said Melton.

Melton works full-time for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and is grateful for the opportunity to minister in Luther more than just on Sunday mornings.

“Our church is small, but I tell the congregation all the time that dynamite comes in small packages. God has blessed our little church in so many ways. We love to hold the Fall Funfest for Halloween and many other activities throughout the year … It isn’t just our church that feels that way. From what I have been able to determine, that mindset is ingrained in every church in Luther,” said Melton.

Auditions for Rainbows in the Mud will be Saturday, December 19 from 1pm – 3 pm and Sunday, December 20 from 2 pm – 3 pm. If you have questions, contact Pastor Melton at 405-258-2875, or the First Christian Church at 405-277-3648.
