Luther Pecan Festival Cookoff Details

Judging criteria announced

The excitement is building for our second annual Luther Pecan Festival Cookoff! The VIP judges are being recruited, and we hear talk of some of the finest bakers and meat smokers in the land who are perfecting their recipes for the big contest. We have four divisions this year. In addition to finding the best PECAN PIE, other divisions are “Pecan Sweet,” “Pecan Appetizer” and “Pecan Savory.”
PLEASE NOTE: All winners from last year will have their entry fees waived. All others have a $10 entry fee. Proceeds benefit Luther’s 4 Our Community.

Congratulations again to our 2017 winners!

Here is the rundown for day of the contest:

  • Entries may be submitted for judging from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the day of the festival at Boydston-Bailey Funeral Home, 105 S. Main.
  • Please make sure there is enough to be judged and then auctioned. Containers will not be returned. Entries will be auctioned at 1:00 pm from the Pecan Festival Stage, with proceeds benefiting 4 Our Community, Inc.

Pecan Pie Division:

All Pecan Pies

Pecan Sweet Division:

Any Sweet (other than Pecan Pie) made with Pecans

Pecan Appetizer Division:

Non-sweet Appetizers made with Pecans

Pecan Savory Division:

Main Dishes made with Pecans, and Meats cooked with Pecans or Pecan Wood

This is a completely blind contest where the person accepting the entries assigns numbers to each, but has no involvement in the actual judging, according to Sheila Farmer, cook-off organizer and president of 4 Our Community.

Judges rate the following on a scale of 1-5 for each entry.

  1. Presentation
  2. Appropriate Texture
  3. Taste
  4. Consistency
  5. Overall Impression

The Grand Champion is chosen from the FIRST place winners in all categories and will be announced from the Pecan Festival Music Stage at 1 pm. Winners receive ribbons, custom prizes and, of course, bragging rights.
